They are known as radish seed, graines de radis, بذور الفجل, بزر الفجل and, in Moroccan Darija, zriât l-fjel (زريعة الفجل), sometimes written fajal or fejel. The botanical name is Raphanus sativus. The photograph shows their natural form: small, rounded to slightly flattened seeds in warm reddish-brown tones, with a few lighter golden and darker seeds among them. Whole, they smell faintly earthy; crushed, they release the sharp, peppery note of fresh radish.

Radish seed has a long place in Moroccan and wider Arab herbal traditions. Grandmothers ground the seeds and stirred them into honey, a preparation traditionally taken to ease a heavy stomach and support digestion after rich meals. Oil pressed from radish seed has its own place in Arab hair-care traditions, where it was massaged into the scalp.
