✨ Organic Moroccan Atriplex Halimus — The Silvery Herb of the Steppes

Atriplex halimus is the hardy saltbush that grows across the dry steppes, hillsides and coasts of Morocco. In Arabic it is called القطف (el gtaf) and, in classical Arabic, الرغل; in Darija you will hear gtaf, guettaf or legtaf. In English it is known as Mediterranean saltbush, sea orache or shrubby orache, and in French as arroche halime or pourpier de mer. Our dried herb shows the plant as it is: soft, silvery grey-green leaves, slender pale stems and a few small clustered seed heads. The leaves feel light and slightly powdery, and they carry a mild, earthy, faintly salty herbal scent.

🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses

Gtaf has a long place in Moroccan household herbal tradition. Grandmothers kept the dried leaves in the kitchen and prepared them as a warm infusion, and in popular Moroccan practice it was traditionally drunk by people looking after their blood sugar. It was also taken as a simple after-meal cup for digestive comfort. In the countryside the fresh, salty young leaves were once cooked like a wild green, and shepherds valued the shrub as grazing for sheep, goats and camels through the dry season. Across North Africa and the Middle East it is remembered as a plant of hard land that stays green when little else does.

🍵 How to Use

  • 🍵 Steep the dried leaves as a plain herbal infusion and drink warm.
  • 🫖 Simmer briefly for a stronger traditional cup, then strain.
  • 🌿 Keep it as a single herb, or add it to your own household herbal blends.

🥣 Traditional Gtaf Infusion

  1. Place 1 teaspoon of dried Atriplex halimus leaves in a cup or small teapot.
  2. Pour over about 250 ml of hot water.
  3. Cover and leave to steep for about 10 minutes.
  4. Strain the leaves and stems, then drink warm, plain and unsweetened as the tradition prefers.
