✨ Moroccan Natural Colocynth — A Desert Fruit of Traditional Heritage
Moroccan Natural Colocynth is the dried fruit of Citrullus colocynthis, a desert plant with a round, yellow fruit. It is known as colocynth, bitter apple, bitter cucumber, desert gourd, hanzal and handal; in Arabic it is called حنظل and الحنظل. The pictured fruit is opened into loose dried segments, revealing pale fibrous flesh and many smooth brown seeds. Its unusual form, strong bitter character and long folk history make it a familiar material in traditional Moroccan and Arab households.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
Across Maghrebi and Arab folk tradition, hanzal was kept in the home and used in customary protective practices associated with warding off the evil eye. It was also traditionally mentioned in household preparations for the body and scalp, and some families kept the dry fruit as part of their inherited herbal cupboard. These are traditional cultural uses that belong to the story of the plant; this listing presents the dried fruit in its natural, unblended form.
🧿 How to Use
- 🧿 Keep the dried fruit segments in a small bowl, jar or protected traditional display.
- 🌿 Use the whole dried pieces in a customary household setting where hanzal is part of family tradition.
- ✨ Add the opened fruit and visible seeds to a dry botanical collection or heritage display.
- 🫙 Handle the pieces with clean, dry hands and return unused material to a sealed container.
