✨ Moroccan Natural Takaout — The Tamarisk Gall of Moroccan Beauty
Takaout, written تكاوت in Arabic and often called عشبة تكاوت, is also spelled tkaout, tacaout or takawt, and is known in English as tamarisk galls. The name comes from Amazigh, and the material comes from the tamarisk tree (Tamarix articulata, also called Tamarix aphylla), known in Arabic as الأثل or الطرفاء. The small rounded nuggets form on the tree’s branches and are gathered and dried. They are light brown to dark brown, rough and slightly knobbly, with fine twig fragments among them, and carry a dry, earthy, woody scent.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
In Moroccan tradition takaout is above all a hair ingredient. Grandmothers ground it and mixed it into henna so that the henna gave a darker brown or black shade rather than bright red, and it was a regular part of the henna ritual before weddings and celebrations. It was also traditionally used to prepare the hair and scalp in hammam routines.
Rich in natural tannins, takaout was long used by Moroccan craftsmen for tanning leather and for dyeing wool in brown and black tones. In folk practice it was traditionally used in mouth rinses for the gums, and herbalists (العشابة) kept it among the astringent remedies of the household.
