✨ Moroccan Dried Wormwood Herb — Aromatic Chih for Traditional Homes

Moroccan dried wormwood is an aromatic herb known as chih, chihe and chiba, and in Arabic as الشيح or الشِّيح. It is also called armoise or absinthe in French and wormwood in English. The photograph shows it in a loose, chopped form, with muted green to golden-brown leaves, tiny flowering pieces and fine pale stems. Its pronounced herbaceous, bitter scent makes chih one of the familiar dried plants kept in Moroccan herb cupboards.

🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses

In Moroccan, North African and Arab household tradition, chih was prepared as a warm, bitter herbal infusion, especially after a rich meal or during seasonal home routines. It was traditionally used for digestive comfort and appetite, with each family keeping its own familiar preparation. Its strong aroma also gave it a place in customary household fumigation and protective rituals: families kept or lightly burned dried chih to scent the home and to ward off the evil eye in traditions that value these practices.

🍵 How to Use

  • 🍵 Prepare a light traditional chih infusion and strain the herb before serving.
  • 🌿 Add a small amount to a personal dried-herb blend when you know the flavour you want.
  • 🧺 Keep a little dried chih with household herbs for its distinctive aromatic character.
  • 🧿 Use it in customary Moroccan fumigation or protective rituals according to family practice.

🥣 Simple Traditional Chih Infusion

  1. Place a small pinch of dried chih in a cup or small teapot.
  2. Pour over hot water and cover the cup.
  3. Leave briefly for the aromatic bitterness to infuse the water.
  4. Strain the herb well, then serve the warm infusion according to your usual tradition.
