✨ Indian Costus Root — A Fragrant Root in Two Forms
Indian costus root is the dried root of Saussurea costus, a mountain plant with a warm, woody, earthy aroma. It is known as Indian costus, costus root, Qust al Hindi, Qist al Hindi, qost hindi, qist hindi, kust hindi and القسط الهندي. In Morocco and across Arab and South Asian households, the name often appears simply as qost or qist.
Choose the form that fits your preparation. The whole-root photograph shows naturally irregular, ridged root pieces with a hollow centre; the powder photograph shows the same material ground into a loose tan-brown, fibrous powder. Both forms carry the root’s characteristic aromatic scent.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
Indian costus has long had a place in Arab, South Asian and Ayurvedic household traditions. It was traditionally used in warm herbal preparations for digestive comfort and easier breathing, and its fragrance was valued in customary aromatic mixtures. Families also prepared it as part of traditional hair and scalp routines. These uses belong to living household tradition.
- 🍵 Whole pieces were simmered or the powder was added to customary warm herbal preparations.
- 🧴 Powder was mixed with water into a simple paste for traditional hair and scalp care.
- ✨ The root was included in aromatic household blends for its warm, woody character.
🥣 Simple Traditional Preparation
- Break a whole root piece into smaller pieces when your customary preparation calls for it, or measure the powder into a clean bowl.
- For an external paste, add water little by little to the powder and stir until it is smooth enough to spread.
- Use the freshly mixed paste as part of a traditional hair or scalp routine, then rinse it away after use.
For warm household preparations, families traditionally used either a whole piece or the powder according to their familiar recipe, then strained the preparation before serving.
