Moroccan juniper is known as juniper, arar, l’aarar and l3rar; in Arabic it is العرعار or عرعار, and in French it is genévrier. This single-ingredient botanical comes from the Juniperus genus. Its dry evergreen character is recognisable in both forms: the Leaves are loose, chopped green foliage with fine twigs, while the Powder is a fine green milling of the same aromatic plant material. Both have a fresh, woody and resinous scent.

In Moroccan household tradition, arar was burned in small amounts to perfume the home and used in customary fumigation around family gatherings. It has long held a place in protective rituals intended to ward off the evil eye. In folk care, its aromatic foliage was traditionally prepared in steam and bath-water routines for cold-season comfort, while its scent helped give cupboards and living spaces a botanical note.
