These are the whole dried tubers of Cyperus rotundus, a sedge known in English as nut grass, nutsedge, purple nutsedge or coco grass. In Morocco and across the Arab world it is called السعد (Saad, often written sa3d in Darija) or سعد كوفي, in French souchet rond, and in Indian tradition nagarmotha or musta. Each small tuber is dark brown and spindle-shaped, marked with fine rings and fibrous tips. Crushed or ground, it releases a warm, woody, slightly spicy and earthy scent.

Saad has a long place in Arab herbal and beauty traditions, and classical Arab herbalists wrote about it. Women in Morocco and the Gulf traditionally ground the tubers and added the powder to hair preparations, often alongside henna and other herbs, to perfume the hair and care for the scalp. Its aroma also made it a familiar ingredient in body scrubs, bridal beauty preparations and dry aromatic blends for the home. In Moroccan and Arab households the tubers were traditionally simmered into a warm drink taken after heavy meals for digestive comfort, and in Ayurvedic and Chinese traditions the same plant was used for comfort during the monthly cycle and for a settled stomach.
