Flower of Maryam is the dried, curled form of Anastatica hierochuntica, a desert plant that gathers into a small brown ball when dry and slowly spreads its fine branches in water. It is known as Kaff Maryam, Kaf Maryam, Palm of Mary, Rose of Jericho, Flower of Maryam and كف مريم. In Arabic it is also called نبتة مريم, and in French it is known as Rose de Jéricho or Fleur de Marie. Its remarkable opening shape makes it a meaningful plant for the home, a prayer corner or a traditional gift.

In Moroccan and wider Arab household tradition, Kaff Maryam was kept as a symbol of renewal, ease and blessing. Families traditionally placed it in water to watch it open, especially during moments of prayer, a new beginning or a family occasion. It was also traditionally associated with women’s rituals around childbirth and with prayers for comfort and ease. These are customary uses passed from one generation to another, and part of the plant’s cultural story.

• 🌿 Add enough clean water to cover the base and let the branches open gradually.
• ✨ Keep it as a traditional decorative piece during prayer or a family occasion.
• 🔄 Empty the water and allow the plant to dry completely before storing it again.

1. Choose a clean, wide bowl.
2. Set the dry Flower of Maryam in the centre.
3. Add water around the base and observe the branches unfold.
4. After use, remove it from the water and dry it in an airy place before putting it away.
