✨ Moroccan Natural Rock Salt — Lmelha Lhaya for Home and Bath
Moroccan natural rock salt is raw mineral salt in rough, unrefined chunks. In Morocco it is called الملحة الحية (lmelha lhaya, “living salt”), and it is also known as rock salt, halite, crude salt or salt stone. In French it is sel gemme or sel brut, and in Arabic ملح صخري or ملح حجري. The pieces in our photograph show its natural character: pale pink and apricot tones, patches of white crystal and streaks of grey mineral. Nothing is bleached or ground; every piece keeps the shape it had when it was broken from the rock.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
In Moroccan homes, lmelha lhaya has long been kept for protection. Grandmothers placed pieces at the threshold, in the corners of a new house or under a pillow to ward off the evil eye (العين) and envy. A pinch of salt was traditionally thrown with harmal (الحرمل) onto glowing charcoal while prayers were recited, and the crackle of the salt in the fire was taken as a sign that the bad eye was leaving. Before weddings, births and a move to a new home, salt was part of the household fumigation (التبخيرة) that marked a fresh start. In the hammam and at home, rock salt dissolved in warm water was traditionally used for soaking tired feet and for a cleansing rinse after the bath, which gave the “living salt” its reputation as a purifier of both body and home.
🧴 How to Use
- 🧿 Place one or two pieces in a small dish at the entrance or in the corner of a room, following your family custom.
- 🔥 Crush a small piece and sprinkle a pinch with harmal on a lit charcoal disc in a heat-proof burner for a traditional tbkhira.
- 🛁 Dissolve a handful in a basin of warm water for a traditional foot soak.
- 🧖 Add a few pieces to warm bath water as part of a home hammam routine.
🥣 Traditional Foot Soak
- Fill a basin with warm water, deep enough to cover the ankles.
- Add a handful of rock salt pieces and stir until they begin to dissolve.
- Soak the feet for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse with clean water and dry them well.
🧾 Ingredients
One ingredient: natural rock salt. No colour, fragrance or other material is added.
🔬 Product Profile
Rock salt is a natural mineral, mostly sodium chloride, formed in underground salt deposits. Its colour changes from piece to piece, from almost white to pink, orange and grey, depending on the natural minerals held within the crystal. It is supplied as raw, irregular chunks of different sizes.
📦 How We Sell It
Raw natural rock salt in loose, irregular pieces, available in 100g, 250g, 500g, 1kg, 2kg, 3kg and 5kg. The size and colour of the pieces vary naturally within each order.
⚠️ Usage Note
Sold as raw pieces for traditional household and bath use, not as refined table salt. Keep away from the eyes.
🌤️ Storage
Salt draws moisture from the air, so keep it in a tightly closed jar or pouch in a dry place, away from steam and humidity. Kept dry, rock salt lasts for years; if the pieces become damp, let them dry in the open air before closing them away again.
