✨ Dried Oleander Leaves — Morocco’s Bitter Defla
Oleander is the evergreen flowering shrub known in Morocco as defla or difla (الدفلة, الدفلى), in classical Arabic also as الحبن (habn), in Tamazight as alili, in French as laurier-rose, in English as oleander or rosebay, and botanically as Nerium oleander. Its pink and white blossoms brighten wadis, riverbanks and roadsides across Morocco. The leaves in the photograph are long and lance-shaped with a clear central vein, dried to a soft sage and olive green, with a few pieces of natural stem among them. They feel firm and leathery and carry a faint, dry herbal scent.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
Defla has a firm place in Moroccan folk tradition, always for use on the outside of the body. Grandmothers simmered the leaves in water and used the cooled liquid as a rinse for the hair and scalp, a traditional remedy against dandruff and head lice. The same leaf water was traditionally applied to itchy skin and added to warm foot baths, and warm leaf compresses were laid on aching joints in the old country way of easing rheumatic pain. Its famous bitterness gave Arabic a proverb still heard today: أمرّ من الدفلة, “more bitter than defla”, said of a hard truth or a difficult time.
🧴 Traditional Preparation
This is how Moroccan households traditionally prepared a defla wash for external use:
- A small handful of dried leaves was placed in a pot of water.
- The water was brought to a simmer for several minutes, then left to cool completely.
- The liquid was strained and used only as an external rinse for the hair, scalp or feet, then rinsed away.
