✨ Dried Olive Leaves — The Leaf of Morocco’s Blessed Tree
Olive leaves come from the olive tree, Olea europaea, the tree at the heart of Moroccan hillsides, farms and family tables. They are known in Arabic as ورق الزيتون or أوراق الزيتون, in Darija as warq zitoun or ouraq zitoun, in French as feuilles d’olivier, and in Amazigh the olive tree is called azemmour. The leaves in the photograph are long, narrow and slender, silvery sage-green on top with paler undersides, many of them gently curled from drying. In hot water they give an earthy, green and pleasantly bitter infusion.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
The olive is honoured across the Arab and Mediterranean world as a blessed tree, named in the Quran and long seen as a symbol of peace, light and abundance. In Moroccan homes, grandmothers kept dried olive leaves in the kitchen cupboard and simmered them into a bitter tea that was traditionally drunk to support balanced blood sugar and healthy blood pressure, to ease fevers and to comfort the body during the cold season. In North African and Levantine folk practice the leaves were also infused for rinsing the hair and skin, and in some Arab homes dried olive leaves were burned on charcoal to bless the house and ward off the evil eye.
🍵 How to Use
- 🫖 Simmer the leaves in water for a classic olive leaf tea.
- 🌱 Add a few leaves to a pot of mint, verbena or other herbs for a homemade blend.
- 🍯 Soften the natural bitterness with honey, a slice of lemon or fresh mint.
- 💧 Let a strong infusion cool and use it as a traditional rinse for hair or skin.
🥣 Traditional Olive Leaf Tea
- Place about one tablespoon of dried olive leaves in a small pot for each cup.
- Add a cup of water and bring it to a gentle boil.
- Lower the heat and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Strain, then serve warm on its own or sweetened with a little honey.
