✨ Moroccan Dried Safflower Flowers — Warm Colour from a Familiar Herb

Moroccan dried safflower flowers are the vivid orange-red florets of Carthamus tinctorius. They are known as safflower, usfur, osfor, qortom and false saffron; in Arabic they are called عصفر, العصفر, قرطم and القرطم. In French, the flower is called carthame. The photograph shows loose, finely dried petals in shades of amber, orange and red, with a light floral-herbal scent. Safflower is valued for the warm colour it releases and for its place in Moroccan household traditions.

🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses

In Moroccan, North African and Arab traditions, safflower was used to bring a golden-orange tint to food and drinks when a gentle natural colour was wanted. It was traditionally steeped as a floral drink and added to sweets, rice dishes and family recipes. Grandmothers also used safflower in customary beauty preparations, where its coloured petals were appreciated in blends for the face and hair. In some homes, it was prepared or kept for comforting family rituals and occasions of hospitality.

🍵 How to Use

  • 🍵 Steep a small pinch of dried petals in hot water for a light safflower infusion.
  • 🍚 Add a little to rice, couscous or a sauce for a warm natural colour.
  • 🍰 Use the petals in syrup, milk desserts or traditional sweets for a delicate orange hue.
  • 🧴 Blend with other customary dry ingredients for a traditional beauty preparation.

🥣 Simple Safflower Infusion

  1. Place a small pinch of dried safflower petals in a cup or teapot.
  2. Pour over hot water and cover the cup or pot.
  3. Leave for several minutes until the water takes on a warm colour.
  4. Strain the petals and serve the infusion warm.
