✨ Star Anise — The Star-Shaped Spice with a Sweet, Warm Aroma
Star anise is the dried, star-shaped fruit of Illicium verum, an evergreen tree of southern China and Vietnam. It is known in Arabic as اليانسون النجمي or يانسون نجمي, and also as باديان (badian); in French as anis étoilé or badiane; and in Chinese cooking as bajiao, meaning “eight corners”. Each rust-brown pod usually has eight woody points, and many open to reveal a single glossy seed in each point. Break one and it releases a sweet, warm, liquorice-like aroma that is stronger and deeper than green anise.
Despite the shared scent, star anise is a different plant from green anise, the small seed Moroccans call النافع (nafaa). Both owe their fragrance to anethole, which is why they are so often used in the same drinks and sweets.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
Star anise travelled the old spice routes from East Asia to India, Persia and the Arab world. In Chinese tradition it is one of the defining notes of five-spice powder and slow-braised dishes, and it was traditionally valued as a warming spice in the cold months. In Arab and Moroccan homes, a pod or two was traditionally simmered in hot drinks after heavy meals and on winter evenings, and grandmothers added it to spiced milk and herbal infusions for its comforting warmth. Its perfect star shape also gave it a place in folk tradition: a whole pod was kept in the home or carried as a small charm for good luck, and pods were tucked among spices and linens for their fragrance.
🍵 How to Use
- 🍵 Drop one pod into a pot of Moroccan tea, coffee or hot milk as it brews.
- 🍲 Simmer whole pods in tagines, broths, rice and slow-cooked meat dishes, then lift them out before serving.
- 🍐 Poach pears, quinces or dried fruit in syrup with star anise and cinnamon.
- 🍪 Grind a few pods finely for cakes, biscuits and homemade spice blends.
- 🏡 Add whole pods to a bowl of dried flowers and cinnamon sticks to scent a room.
🥣 Warm Star Anise Infusion
- Bring 250 ml of water to the boil.
- Add 1 or 2 star anise pods, and a small cinnamon stick if you like.
- Lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, then cover and let it rest for 5 minutes more.
- Strain, sweeten with honey or sugar to taste, and serve warm.
🧾 Ingredients
100% whole dried star anise pods. No blend and no added flavouring.
🔬 Product Profile
Star anise comes from Illicium verum, a tree in the Schisandraceae family, native to southern China and Vietnam. It is a staple of Moroccan kitchens and spice stalls. We supply it as whole, loose dried pods rather than powder, so the aroma stays locked inside until you use it.
📦 How We Sell It
Whole, loose star anise pods, available in 100g, 250g, 500g, 1kg, 2kg, 3kg and 5kg. Loose pods naturally include some broken points and separated seeds, which flavour just as well.
⚠️ Usage Note
Star anise is a kitchen spice for everyday cooking. Do not prepare star anise infusions for babies.
🌤️ Storage
Keep in an airtight jar or sealed pouch in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and humidity. Stored whole, star anise keeps its fragrance for a long time, so grind only what you need. When a broken pod no longer smells strongly sweet, it is time to replace it.
