✨ Moroccan Khella — The Golden Toothpick Herb
Khella is the dried flower head of Ammi visnaga (also written Visnaga daucoides). In Morocco it is called الخلة (el khella) and بوشنيخة (bouchnikha), and in French ammi visnage or herbe aux cure-dents. In English it is known as khella, visnaga or toothpick weed. Each umbel is a tight bundle of straight, straw-coloured rays gathered at the base, with small ribbed seeds clustered at their tips. The dried herb has a light, warm and slightly bitter herbal scent.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
Khella has a long place in Moroccan and wider North African herbal tradition. Its stiff rays were traditionally snapped off one by one and used as natural toothpicks, which is how it earned the name toothpick weed and a spot beside the tea tray in many homes. Grandmothers steeped the umbels and seeds in hot water, and in Moroccan and Egyptian folk practice the infusion was traditionally taken for kidney and urinary comfort. In old Egyptian tradition khella was also prepared for easier breathing and for cramps. The dried umbels were kept in the kitchen cupboard as a familiar household remedy, prepared in small cups rather than large glasses.
🍵 How to Use

🥣 Traditional Khella Infusion

- Cover and leave to steep for about 10 minutes.
- Strain and drink warm, plain or with a little honey.
