✨ Moroccan Organic Anacyclus Root — The Sneezing Root of the Atlas

Anacyclus root is the dried root of Anacyclus pyrethrum, a small daisy-like plant of the Moroccan Atlas mountains. In Morocco it is best known as عود العطاس (oud el atas, “the sneezing stick”) and, in Darija and Amazigh, as تقنديشت (Tiqendicht) or Taghendest. In Arabic herbal books it is عاقر قرحا (Aqarqarha), in India it is Akarkara, and in English it is called pellitory root or pellitory of Spain. The roots are long, slender and wrinkled, with a warm brown bark, a paler fibrous crown and a sharp, tingling taste that makes the mouth water the moment you bite into a piece.

🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses

Few roots have a name that explains them so clearly. A pinch of the ground root was traditionally sniffed to provoke sneezing and clear a heavy head, which is how it earned the name عود العطاس. In Moroccan households a small piece was traditionally chewed or held against an aching tooth and sore gums, and a warm decoction was used as a mouth rinse and gargle. In Arab and Unani medicine, عاقر قرحا was a classic warming ingredient, traditionally added to tonic blends and maajoun preparations for men and to winter remedies against cold. Ayurvedic tradition knows the same root as Akarkara and used it for the mouth, the voice and general vitality.

🍵 How to Use

  • 🦷 Chew a small piece of root slowly, the way it was traditionally used for the mouth and gums.
  • 🥣 Simmer a piece in water to prepare a warm traditional mouth rinse or gargle.
  • 🌾 Grind a piece finely at home when a recipe calls for the powdered root.
  • 🫙 Keep the root whole until use, so its sharpness and aroma stay intact.

🧴 Traditional Mouth Rinse

  1. Break off a small piece of root and rinse it quickly under clean water.
  2. Place it in a small pan with one cup of water and simmer gently for about 10 minutes.
  3. Let it cool until lukewarm, then strain.
  4. Swish the rinse around the mouth or gargle, then spit it out.

🧾 Ingredients

100% dried anacyclus root (Anacyclus pyrethrum). No blend and nothing added.

🔬 Product Profile

Anacyclus belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae), the same family as chamomile. The plant grows wild in the Middle and High Atlas of Morocco, and its roots are dug, cleaned and dried whole. This product is a single-ingredient dried botanical, supplied as whole root pieces rather than powder.

📦 How We Sell It

You receive whole, loose dried root pieces, available in 10g, 50g, 100g, 150g, 200g and 250g.

⚠️ Usage Note

The root is very pungent, so it was always used in small pieces or pinches. Keep it out of reach of children.

🌤️ Storage

Keep the roots in a tightly closed jar or pouch in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Stored well, whole dried roots keep their sharpness for many months. Take out a piece with clean, dry hands and close the rest straight away.
