✨ Moroccan Natural Lavender — Khzama, the Scent of a Calm Home
Lavender is known in Morocco as khzama (الخزامة), in classical Arabic as الخزامى (khuzama), in French as lavande and in botany as Lavandula. What you receive are the dried flower buds: small, grey-violet and slightly silvery, mixed with a few fine green stem pieces, just as they fall from the harvested flower heads. Rub a pinch between your fingers and the room fills with that clean, sweet and slightly herbal fragrance everyone recognises.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
In Moroccan homes khzama has long been kept close at hand. Grandmothers tucked it among folded clothes, bedding and the bride’s trousseau to keep fabrics fresh and to keep moths away. It was brewed as a warm infusion in the evening, traditionally used to calm the nerves, ease a restless night and settle the stomach after a heavy meal. In the hammam, a lavender rinse was poured over the hair and body for its fresh scent, and the buds were scattered on charcoal with other herbs to perfume the house before guests arrived. Across the Arab world and the Mediterranean, lavender has long been a symbol of cleanliness, calm and a welcoming home.
