✨ Abrus Precatorius Lucky Beads — Red-and-Black Seeds of Tradition
Abrus Precatorius Lucky Beads are the striking, hard seeds of Abrus precatorius, immediately recognisable by their bright scarlet-red surface and neat black eye. They are also called rosary peas, jequirity beans, ratti seeds, gunja seeds and crab’s-eye seeds. In Morocco, customers may know them as حبة العشق (Habat el Ashq, “love seed”) or عين العفريت (Ain el Afrit). Their small, smooth, bead-like form and strong two-colour contrast make them a remarkable material for a carefully kept collection or dry decorative display.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
These seeds have travelled through many cultural traditions. In North African and Arab folk custom, حبة العشق and عين العفريت were traditionally carried or kept as talismanic seeds associated with affection, protection and warding off the evil eye. In South Asian traditions, where they are known as ratti or gunja, they appeared in devotional objects and were traditionally used as small reference seeds. Older folk traditions also mentioned them in preparations for the body and hair; this product is offered only for its decorative and traditional heritage.
🧿 Decorative and Traditional Display
- 🧿 Keep whole seeds in a small bowl, glass jar or display tray.
- ✨ Add their red-and-black contrast to a dry, protected decorative arrangement.
- 🌿 Collect them as a natural botanical curiosity with a long traditional story.
- 📿 Use them as a visual element in a closed traditional display, without altering the seeds.
