✨ Moroccan Licorice Root — Root Sticks and Powder
Known in Morocco as arq souss, arq sous, erk souss and عرق السوس, licorice is the dried root of Glycyrrhiza glabra. It is also called liquorice, sweet root, réglisse and racine de réglisse. The Root option shows long woody sticks with brown bark, pale cut ends and visible fibres; the Powder option is a loose golden-brown ground root. Both forms carry the warm, naturally sweet character for which this traditional botanical is known.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
In Moroccan and Arab tradition, arq souss was prepared as a gently sweet hot or cold drink, especially when a comforting herbal cup was wanted. It was traditionally used to soothe the throat, settle the stomach after a meal and lend natural sweetness to herbal preparations. Pieces of the root and its ground form were kept in home pantries for infusions, traditional refreshments and everyday herbal blends.
🍵 How to Use
- 🍵 Simmer Root sticks in water for a warm licorice decoction.
- 🧊 Cool the prepared drink and serve it chilled as a traditional sweet-root refreshment.
- 🥄 Stir Powder into hot water for a quicker preparation, then strain if you prefer a clear cup.
- 🌿 Add either form to a homemade herbal blend for its woody aroma and naturally sweet note.
🥣 Simple Licorice Infusion
- Choose Root sticks for simmering or Powder for a quicker preparation.
- Place the licorice in a small pot of water and warm it gently.
- Let the water take on the root’s colour and aroma, then strain before serving.
- Enjoy warm, or allow it to cool fully and serve over ice.
