Moroccan Laktira is a dried natural plant gum, also known as laktira, laktirah, lakthira, kathira, katira gum and gum tragacanth. In Moroccan Darija, it is commonly called laktira. The whole form appears as irregular translucent pieces in shades of honey, amber and light brown; once hydrated, it develops a soft gel-like texture. The powder is the same material milled finely for easier measuring and mixing.

In Moroccan and wider North African household traditions, laktira was kept for beauty preparations and kitchen use. It was traditionally hydrated for hair preparations, where its gel-like texture helped give hair a smooth, well-set appearance. It was also used in simple face and skin preparations. In some food traditions, gum tragacanth was soaked as a thickening ingredient for drinks and desserts. These are customary uses passed between households, not a substitute for a personal care routine tailored to you.

• 💧 For a beauty gel, soak a small amount of whole laktira in clean water until it swells and softens.
• 🥣 For powder, add it gradually to water and stir well so it hydrates evenly.

• 🍨 In customary kitchen preparations, hydrate it first before using it only as a thickening ingredient.
