✨ Organic Moroccan Origanum Vulgare Roots — Hayat Nfous, the Herb of the Soul
These are the dried roots and lower stems of Origanum vulgare, the plant known in English as oregano, common oregano or wild marjoram, and in French as origan or marjolaine sauvage. In Arabic it is الأوريغانو, and Moroccan herbalists sell this root-and-stem cut as حياة النفوس (Hayat Nfous), “the life of the souls”, a name that shows how highly households valued it. It is a close cousin of the Moroccan zaatar (Origanum compactum). The material is a tangle of slender, wiry roots and stems in shades of rose-red and gold, mixed with small clusters of dried pink flowers, and it releases a warm, herbal oregano scent as soon as the bag is opened.
🌿 Traditional and Cultural Uses
Oregano has a long place in Mediterranean, Arab and North African household herbalism. In Moroccan homes a warm infusion of the plant was traditionally drunk after heavy meals to settle the stomach and ease bloating. In winter it was simmered into a hot drink for coughs, colds and a heavy chest, and the steam rising from the pot was breathed in to clear the head. The cooled preparation was traditionally used as a mouth rinse, and a handful of the herb was added to warm bath water for its comforting aroma. Grandmothers kept Hayat Nfous in the kitchen cupboard as one of the everyday herbs of the family.
🍵 How to Use
